Because of the network effect, even using unauthorized, zero-cost copies of Microsoft software supports the company. Also, using software that only runs on their platform is a way of supporting them as well.

I think Negroponte is doing a good job given the obstacles he has to overcome. BTW - what has Apple done lately to promote laptops for children? It certainly isn't in the (Macbook) air as far as I can tell.
